The making of a DTR

I've had some requests to show some of the steps to make a DTR.
Some of the tools I use to make a DTR are as follows.
* A Midi Lathe
* Nova chuck with 40mm jaws
* Cordless drill * Tap and Die set
* Calipers
* Spare time and patients !

The Pusher plate is made first. This plate is made from a small length of nylon rod stock. After it is set inside the nova chuck I shape the plate using tools I made myself due to the material and shaping that is needed.

The plate is then threaded and removed from the chuck.

I made a special jig that the plate screws onto so I can finish shaping the topside of the plate.

Nylon is very messy to work with and I'm constantly stopping to cut ribbons of nylon away to continue.

The bell is made next using the same nylon rod stock as the plate. As I shape the bell I check it with a gauge I made up to ensure that each bell is made the same. The bell is 34.2 - 34.8 mm ( 1 3/8" )
at its widest.

I check the bell as it's spinning at 850 RPM's with my fingers to make sure it's is as smooth as silk.
The bell is then drilled and threaded for the thumb screws.

Measurements with calipers are taken at every step to be sure every DTR is exactly the same.

The gripper is then cut on
the lathe also, this is a new
process as of October 2008
This insures a near perfect cut. I made a special jig to hold the nipple as it spins at 8500 RPM's

The push rod is made with ¼” nylon rod that is drilled sanded and then threaded using a tool I made to ensure that the threads are straight.

Even though I did not show every step in making a DTR, you should have some idea by now of what's involved in making one.
